The
Chatham County Citizens Corps offers it’s most heart-felt
condolences to the citizens of the gulf coast and to the families
suffering losses due to Hurricane Katrina, which has been called the
costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
The volunteer medical response to victims of
this disaster from Chatham County / Savannah is recognized as an
outstanding assistance effort by our community.
The Chatham County Medical Reserve Corps, made
up of medical professionals from all of Chatham’s medical community,
responded to Louisiana and Mississippi and performed life-saving
measures that impacted many lives and demonstrated that we (Savannahians)
are willing to go the extra mile to help our fellow Americans. The
mission planned for 14 days was cut short to 7 days by a hurricane
(Ophelia) threat to Chatham County.
Among many accomplishments, the Chatham MRC
personnel conducted Search & Rescue aboard boats in New Orleans,
delivered medical supplies to a small rural hospital, delivered
food, water, and non-medical supplies to a church / relief
organization in Bogalusa, opened a relief/medical shelter in Baton
Rouge, assisted in medical care to the patients of LSU Medical
Center, delivered generators to families in need in Mississippi,
provided direct medical support to National Guard units providing
rescue missions in New Orleans, and aided several police units by
providing professional Search & Rescue Dogs (Labradors) to aid in
their mission.
The team of dedicated professionals of the MRC
performed this mission without compensation and did so in an austere
environment that included working in extreme heat, sleeping on cots,
limited showers, limited selection of food and drink. But not one
complaint about comfort, and as long as Savannah / Chatham is safe
they will respond again on a moments notice.
